Blue Jays 'unlikely' to trade for 2.70 ERA ace from floundering AL Central team

The Toronto Blue Jays, after starting the season with some terrible vibes, are back close to .500 at a 27-29 record, and are tied with the Athletics and Minnesota Twins for the third and final Wild Card spot.

For as bad as things were, the Blue Jays might be able to avoid acting as sellers and instead head into the August 3 trade deadline as clear-cut buyers. But that doesn't mean they'll go for broke.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic shared an update for the Blue Jays on one player, a 2.70 ERA ace from a floundering team in the AL Central who would be a great pick-up. But, this update revealed they're "unlikely" to acquire this ace despite being a good fit.

Blue Jays get 'unlikely' trade rumor on Tarik Skubal

"The Jays will be involved, but I just don't see them offering a prospect package that would satisfy the Tigers, so I think it's unlikely he ends up here," Bowden writes.

Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers is the hottest topic ahead of this year's MLB trade deadline. He's very likely to be available with how the Tigers are struggling so much this season.

Detroit is 22-35 on the season, and just lost a series to the Los Angeles Angels, the team with the worst record in the AL. Though this loss to the Angels has Detroit tied for second-to-last in all of MLB, one win more than the Colorado Rockies.

Skubal might be on the injured list right now, as is the case with plenty of the Blue Jays starters, but he's slated to come back fairly soon.

Assuming he looks healthy and good upon his return, there should be no qualms over spending a lot of capital to acquire Skubal by the trade deadline.

But, while the Blue Jays might make sense as a landing spot, with Bowden even placing them as the seventh-best fit for a Skubal trade, he believes it's "unlikely" that this two-time Cy Young award winner lands in Toronto this season.
