Blue Jays' resurgence could come up short thanks to major rotation problem

The Toronto Blue Jays are looking to make the playoffs in 2026 despite their brutal start to the season and their decision to sell at the MLB trade deadline.

But they didn't just sell some players, including starter Kevin Gausman; they also bought, adding Jose Soriano and Spencer Arrighetti. They've recently begun to make up some ground. An issue has come up, however.

Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report highlighted how the Blue Jays' rotation has become a problem, and one that could be the reason for why they wind up missing the postseason this year despite their recent resurgence.

"Toronto Blue Jays: Back of the Rotation Could Be Why They Fall Short," Miller writes. "With Max Scherzer's 7.40 ERA in the No. 4 spot and either a bullpen game or Spencer Arrighetti (8.32 ERA since June 1) in the No. 5 spot, even the favorable schedule might not save them."

Toronto has Dylan Cease firmly in the American League Cy Young conversation, and Soriano has also been pitching well for the team since coming over in a trade.

But, behind those two, there is a real question as to how good this rotation can actually be. Arrighetti and Scherzer are healthy, but they're struggling.

Scherzer's most recent start, a five-inning, two-run outing, did lower his season-long ERA to 7.02, but the Blue Jays lost that game anyway.

Sitting just 3.0 games out of the third and final AL Wild Card spot, the Blue Jays could legitimately make the postseason this year if they get hot.

The only issue is that such a hot streak is going to be very difficult to come by considering how much the back end of the starting rotation is struggling.

Even if the Blue Jays win every start from Soriano and Cease for the rest of the season, the majority of their games will come with questionable at-best starters on the mound.

Miller believes this rotation issue could be what sinks the Blue Jays' season, and looking at the state of the team and how little room they have to work with, this could be how their season comes to an end.
