The Toronto Blue Jays have been one of the most active teams this offseason, and for good reason. They were one game away from defeating the super team Los Angeles Dodgers.
Now, they need to make at least one last huge splash to lock themselves into another World Series run. Fansided’s Christopher Kline proposes they do so by making a blockbuster trade for Detroit Tigers two-time Cy Young Tarik Skubal. With arguments over arbitration money, the Tigers and Skubal could set up a trade for his last year of his current deal.
“Any team willing to pay the necessary price for Skubal will need to be willing to re-sign him, too — or at least make an earnest attempt at it. The Toronto Blue Jays deserve your attention accordingly. Toronto has a sneaky-deep farm system and more than enough MLB-caliber talent to toss Detroit’s direction. This pitching staff is mighty strong after the Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce signings, but Skubal clears them all by a healthy margin. If the Blue Jays can somehow roll out Skubal, Cease, Kevin Guasman and Trey Yesavage as their postseason four, with Shane Bieber in the mix too, it becomes unclear how many AL teams can realistically compete. Yesavage would be the ultimate return chip, though, for Detroit. The Blue Jays also have MLB-ready pitchers like Ricky Tiedemann and Jake Bloss. Potential hitters for Detroit: Addison Barger, Nathan Lukes, JoJo Parker,” Kline wrote.
This past season, Skubal posted a 13-6 record, a 2.21 ERA, 241 Ks, and a WHIP of 0.891 over 195 innings pitched. As Kline stated, a rotation with him, Dylan Cease, Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, and potentially Trey Yesavage would arguably be the best in the American League.
The question is, would they rather pay him or Kyle Tucker? The Jays have been the favorite for Tucker, but Skubal only has one year left on his deal. They’d be shelling out three nine-figure deals in three years, which might be too much for them.
However, if they don’t care, then making this move is the smartest thing to do. If they do, they’d have a team that rivals their World Series rival.
