The Toronto Blue Jays have made a few key moves this offseason. They traded for Andres Gimenez and also signed closer Jeff Hoffman to a three-year, $33 million contract.
However, they may not be done just yet. Throughout the offseason, they have been linked to star third baseman Alex Bregman, who is likely not headed back to the Houston Astros.
The Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers have been in on him as well, but Buster Olney of ESPN believes Toronto could be the favorites to land him.
"Now the Astros have moved on and the Red Sox, Tigers and Blue Jays all have varying degrees of interest. One of the execs speculates that in the end, the Jays are in position to offer the most money, given their level of desperation. Now Bregman has choices to make," Olney wrote.
Bregman is still searching for a long-term deal, and if the Blue Jays are in the best position to offer him the most money, they might also be in the best position to offer him a long-term deal.
The Blue Jays seem to have their sights set on winning in 2025, as evidenced by their decision to keep Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette around despite both players entering the final year of their contracts.
Bregman would give them someone to build around in the future, especially if one, or both players walk in free agency next offseason. Bregman slashed .275/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 75 RBI during the regular season.
But with the door closed on a reunion with Houston, now might be the best time for the Blue Jays to strike and give Bregman the deal he wants.
We'll see how Bregman's market develops in the coming weeks, especially with spring training fast approaching.
