Blue Jays franchise-altering move would land projected $180M star image

The Toronto Blue Jays are a team worth watching as free agency starts to pick up.

Soon enough, players will start to come off the board left and right and sign with organizations. The Blue Jays are a team that seemingly is willing to hand out a large contract or two this winter with the hope of making it back to the playoffs in 2025 after a tough 2024 campaign.

The Blue Jays could use another frontline starting pitcher, and MLB.com's Mark Feinsand listed Toronto among "potential suitors" for Baltimore Orioles star Corbin Burnes.

"Toronto made a big push for Shohei Ohtani last winter, so no contract demands are likely to scare the Blue Jays away," Feinsand said. "With Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and Chris Bassitt headed into their final seasons prior to free agency, the Jays could try to make the most of that window with a big signing, while also protecting themselves against the loss of ace Kevin Gausman, who will be a free agent after the 2026 season."

Burnes is one of the best pitchers in baseball and is a Cy Young Award winner. A move for him is the type of franchise-altering signing that could inject some life into the organization and get Toronto back to the playoffs as fast as possible.

He's going to get paid like the star he is this winter, with a projected $180 million price tag. The Blue Jays can afford that and should act quickly before another team with a big checkbook can. Toronto has a lot of talent and landing Burnes could be just what it needs now.
