Ernie Clement has made himself indispensable to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Could that mean a contract extension is coming? Clement has brought it up.
He was on a recent episode of the popular hockey podcast, Spittin' Chiclets. And during his appearance, Clement shared what kind of contract he might be looking to receive from the Blue Jays in the future.
His suggestion: five years for $35 million.
It was framed more as something that Clement would be happy to expect and not so much an offer that is on the way, at least this early in the year.
It's also hard to know whether Clement would actually be offered a contract even close to that by the Blue Jays.

He has multiple things working against him.
For starters, it doesn't help that Clement just turned 30 years old.
When you combine that with Clement's remaining club control, it gets extra tricky. The Blue Jays control two more arbitration years for Clement before he becomes a free agent after the 2028 season.
At that point of free agency, Clement will be 32 years old.
And in essence, that gives Toronto very little reason to actually pursue such a deal with Clement.
Any contract he would agree to would likely buy out his two remaining arbitration years (2027 and 2028) at rates similar to what Clement could expect to get -- and then maybe tack on an extra year or two. But the Blue Jays don't necessarily have to take that risk right now, even if Clement would be quite happy to secure his long-term future in Toronto.
