Blue Jays cut ties with former Yankees All-Star reliever amid postseason chase

The Toronto Blue Jays have made a handful of roster moves before the final week of the regular season. 

First, right-handed starting pitcher Trey Yesavage was reinstated from the injured list, and fellow righty Chad Dallas was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo. 

Next, the Blue Jays optioned righty Spencer Arrighetti and designated lefty reliever Joe Mantiply for assignment. 

Yesavage will start tonight's game against the Baltimore Orioles as Toronto hopes to keep its postseason dreams alive.

Mantiply, 35, signed a minor league contract with the Blue Jays during the offseason. 

He spent multiple months on the injured list after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in May, throwing just 27 innings in relief. 

The lefty earned an All-Star selection with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2022, three years after making a singular appearance with the New York Yankees. 

This season, Mantiply has a 3.33 ERA with an excellent 4.5% walk rate compared to a below-average 19.8% strikeout rate.

However, he has allowed six runs in 9.1 innings in September. 

Mantiply is not a hard thrower and generates a lot of ground balls.

If he remained on Toronto's roster throughout the season, he would have been controlled through the 2027 season via arbitration.
