The Toronto Blue Jays have continuously struck out on signing superstars this offseason. With limited options remaining in free agency, they could settle for a cheaper veteran to improve their offense.
While listing potential landing spots for New York Mets designated hitter J.D. Martinez, Just Baseball's Leo Morgenstern named the Blue Jays as a potential landing spot.
"We know the Blue Jays have money to spend, even if they have to pay Martinez a premium to persuade him to come to Canada. We also know they want to add a big bat to help protect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the lineup," wrote Morgenstern. "In particular, this team could use some more right-handed power. The Jays finished 28th in isolated power against left-handed pitching in 2024. Martinez, who had a .203 ISO and 139 wRC+ against lefties last season, could help change that."
Martinez is 36 years old and coming off a decent season. He hit just .235 last season but had 16 home runs. He was an All-Star in five of the six seasons leading up to 2024.
The Blue Jays have been unable to land a big fish in free agency. The odds that they land Anthony Santander seem low. Settling for Martinez could be a solid move. Spotrac projects him to sign a one-year, $9.5 million deal this winter. He has six career All-Star selections and three Silver Slugger Awards.
Martinez has 331 career home runs and could be a solid right-handed option for the Blue Jays.
