Blue Jays .714 OPS fan favorite utilityman named as trade candidate

The Toronto Blue Jays are 32-35 on the season, and fighting for keep a spot in the weak American League Wild Card standings. But it's clear this team needs a bit of help to get over the hump and back into the postseason this year.

That's why the August 3 trade deadline is going to be important for this team. While some offensive help couldn't hurt, this team really needs to upgrade the rotation and the bullpen. To do so, the Blue Jays might have to get creative with their trade chips.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, in highlighting the Blue Jays' need for bullpen help, also identified fan favorite utilityman, 27-year-old Davis Schneider, as a potential trade candidate this summer for a few reasons.

Fan favorite Blue Jay Davis Schneider is a trade candidate

"Schneider could be used in such a trade -- possibly for bullpen help -- as the Blue Jays look to bounce back from their sluggish start," Feinsand writes.

With the Blue Jays infielder/outfielder being sent down to the minor leagues after a rough start to the season, he's all of a sudden a potentially valuable trade chip for Toronto.

Feinsand notes how Schneider faces an "uphill battle" to return to the big league roster, with the outfield and infield logjams not giving him much room to challenge for a roster spot.

In the minor leagues this season, Schneider has a .754 OPS, which is significantly better than the .507 OPS he posted this season in 71 at-bats in the Majors before being sent down to the minors.

With the Blue Jays' need for more bullpen and starting rotation help, and the logjam in the infield and the outfield, trading Schneider this season would make a lot of sense for the Blue Jays.

It might not be the move the fans want to see, with the fan favorite utilityman possibly on the move this summer. But, considering the team's struggles this season, they don't have time to be sentimental as they pursue a World Series title.
