The Toronto Blue Jays are not having the kind of season they were hoping to have, as they've gone 34-38 on the year, and are currently on the outside looking in for a postseason spot.
It would not be a shocker if the Blue Jays continued to struggle and wound up missing the postseason at this rate. It would be disappointing, but it's very much a possibility at this point in the season.
If things go south for the Blue Jays, Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report identified one player that might get traded "If Team Goes Belly Up" as Gold Glove Blue Jays $10.75 million outfielder Daulton Varsho.
Blue Jays' Daulton Varsho could be traded if things go south
"Toronto probably won't admit defeat regardless of how the next 40 games play out," Miller writes. But even so, a Varsho trade can't be completely ruled out just yet.
The Blue Jays could collapse from now until the trade deadline, and rather than holding onto players like Varsho, who have expiring contracts, trading them now for a solid return to retool for another postseason run might make sense.
Of course, it would take a monumental collapse for the Blue Jays to even consider trading from their roster with how weak the AL Wild Card field is.

But, with a month and a half until the August 3 trade deadline, the Blue Jays can wind up selling some players later this year if wins are hard to come by in June and July.
If the Blue Jays sell, Varsho is the kind of player who should be on his way out. He has been a solid defender in the outfield, winning a Gold Glove in 2024 with the Blue Jays.
He also is not a terrible hitter, as his .738 OPS this season is good for a 101 OPS+. Last year, he had a 120 OPS+ as he had 20 homers in just 71 games played.
While the Blue Jays aren't planning to sell this season, if things go south, Varsho is an obvious candidate to be moved by the August 3 deadline.
