Blockbuster Red Sox trade pitch would complicate lineup by adding Nolan Arenado

The Boston Red Sox have already made one shocking trade by sending Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. They have the money to add a different superstar now.

The Red Sox managed to dump the rest of Devers' $313 million deal to the Giants, saving over $260 million over the next eight-plus years. With sudden financial flexibility, the team can afford players it previously could not. Sports Illustrated's Patrick McAvoy proposed this trade for Nolan Arenado from the St. Louis Cardinals:

  • Red Sox receive: Nolan Arenado
  • Cardinals receive: Mikey Romero (Red Sox No. 12 prospect) and Blaze Jordan (Red Sox No. 29 prospect)

Adding Arenado to the mix would be complicated. He has only ever played third base, and the Red Sox have Alex Bregman. However, Arenado could fit in if he were willing to learn a new position.

"Cardinals star Nolan Arenado was tied to Boston all offseason but that ended once Alex Bregman signed with the organization," wrote McAvoy. "During the offseason, it was shared that Arenado would be willing to move over to first base for a team."

If Arenado could play first base, the Red Sox would be solving one of their biggest problems while adding an eight-time All-Star to their team. The Cardinals are seven games out of the National League Central lead entering play on Wednesday. If they continue to slide, they could be willing to part ways with Arenado.

Arenado has two more seasons on his $260 million deal. His contract is expensive, but the Red Sox can afford it now. Additionally, he gives them some insurance in case they lose Bregman in free agency.

"This is just a hypothetical deal. It's probably not perfect, but the Red Sox would give the Cardinals two interesting prospects and a little bit of cash to offset some of the rest of his contract," wrote McAvoy. "Boston would get a big-name player under contract through the end of the 2027 season."
