Blockbuster Angels trade idea sees Los Angeles land $115 million Cy Young, create powerful 1-2 punch with Jose Soriano

The Los Angeles Angels find themselves in a bit of a crossroads; sitting at 11-12 and third in the AL West, they could go all-in on contending this season, or be sellers at the deadline.

If they choose the former, there’s a trade out there that could give them a real shot to win the division. Sports Illustrated’s Ryan Shea proposes that the Angels reach out to another California team, the San Francisco Giants, for their Cy Young ace, Robbie Ray.

The trade would look like this:

Angels get: LHP Robbie Ray

Giants get: LAA No. 4 prospect RHP George Klassen, LAA No. 18 prospect RHP Walbert Urena, LAA No. 25 prospect RHP Ubaldo Soto

“The Angels make this trade because they are 11–12 and sitting third in the AL West, right on the edge of staying competitive but still inconsistent enough to need rotation help. After missing the playoffs every year since 2014, they’re motivated to finally push back into contention, and adding Robbie Ray gives them an immediate stabilizer at the top of the rotation,” Shea wrote.

So far this season, Ray has posted a 2-3 record, a 2.86 ERA, 31 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.094 over 28 innings pitched. Pair him with the blazing hot Jose Soriano, and the Angels have the meanest 1-2 punch in their division, and one of the scariest in the MLB.

If the Angels do get him, he could be a rental though. He’s in the final year of his five-year, $115 million contract, so if the Angels do well with him, they’ll need to re-sign him immediately.

Hopefully, they can land and re-sign him, as all signs point to the fact they could be contenders this season.
