Billy Napier's firing from the Florida Gators football program was a long time coming, and incredibly well-documented in the week's leading to the moment Florida's athletic office finally pulled the trigger following his most recent game, which owned a final result that was a win over Mississippi State under a chorus of boos at The Swamp.
Napier had lost the faith of the athletic department, and he had lost the faith of the fan base. Unfortunately for for Gator's head coach, he wasn't going to survive the weekend, win or lose.
As stated in an earlier article covering his likely departure:
"Per USA Today, boosters have already met with Florida's athletic director to send an unmistakable message: Billy Napier has to go.
'Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin met with a handful of influential boosters Tuesday, and was told continuing financial support depends on new direction within the football program. [...]'
'The people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect the ongoing process, said embattled Florida coach Billy Napier could be fired as soon as this weekend. One thing is certain: Napier won't survive another loss.'
For a head coach that's already seen four losses in his first six games, that feels like a clear way to say he'll be fired no matter what happens this weekend."
Prophetic? Not really. The writing wasn't just on the wall, it was posted all throughout the hallway and social media. And on social media, the most vicious shot at the Florida man came courtesy of Hard Rock Bet, when they posted a list of his most likely coaching destinations moving forward. The fifth-highest spot wasn't a football team, it was a roast.
Hard Rock Bet's top 5 Billy Napier destinations:
- North Carolina
- Nebraska
- UCLA
- UAB
- Publix
A brutal dig, kicking the man while he's down, but a funny jab nonetheless.
