Bills ripped for making 'most head-scratching move' of NFL free agency

The Buffalo Bills desperately needed to add to the edge rusher position this offseason.

That's because the team struck out on Joey Bosa in 2025. Bosa disappeared in the second half of the campaign and that led to Buffalo letting him walk, which left a vacancy opposite Greg Rousseau.

In order to take care of that need, the Bills went on to sign former Miami Dolphins edge rusher Bradley Chubb, who is coming off a season in which he had 8.5 sacks.

While that move made all the sense in the world for the Bills, ESPN's Field Yates believes it is the "most head-scratching move" of free agency thus far.

Here's why:

"Buffalo had a significant need to upgrade at edge rusher, and Chubb helps that cause," Yates said. "But the amount was surprising; Chubb's deal includes $29 million guaranteed over three years.

"He is a solid player who piled up 8.5 sacks last season, but that's a steep figure for a soon-to-be 30-year-old rusher. I thought his market would be lighter than that, but Buffalo acted fast with many of the coveted pass rushers unavailable."

We would disagree with Yates here.

Sure, the contract is definitely concerning, especially given Chubb's injury history and age.

But the Bills were in a desperate spot after striking out on higher-profile options like Maxx Crosby, Trey Hendrickson and other free agents who went for astronomical amounts of money on the open market.

Chubb has shown that when he's healthy, he can be a true impact edge rusher and can provide an upgrade over what the Bills got out of Bosa last season.

Was it an ideal move?

No, but it was a move the Bills had to make.
