The Buffalo Bills were one of the teams to watch on Tuesday ahead of the NFL trade deadline, as several NFL insiders reported that they had their eyes on several receivers. Jakobi Meyers, Rashid Shaheed, or maybe a name no one was talking about. Which one would be a Bill by 4:00 EST?
The answer is none.
Meyers was dealt to the Jacksonville Jaguars for fourth and sixth-round picks and Shaheed was sent to the Seahawks for fourth and fifth-round picks. Meanwhile, Bills general manager Brandon Beane made as many trades as you and I, doing nothing to improve a Bills team that needed to get better.
The Bills failed at the NFL trade deadline
Since I already see it coming, for all the Bills fans that will immediately shout "THEY JUST BEAT THE CHIEFS" or "THEY ONLY HAVE TWO LOSSES," they've been in this exact spot before. They have now beaten the Chiefs in five straight regular season games - how has that worked out in January? They have the 14th ranked passing offense in the NFL because they have no boundary receivers with talent. Sending two Day Three picks for a legitimate difference-maker at receiver was a no-brainer move, and yet Beane held onto the picks for whatever reason. Keep in mind third-round pick Landon Jackson can't see the field, for those who hold draft picks in the same vein as their first-born child.
Compare this to what the Colts did, sending two first-round picks to get All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner. Is it a risk to move two first-round picks? Of course. But the Colts see where they are atop the AFC and pushed their chips to the middle of the table to try and make a run. That's the mindset good teams should have - aggressive and guns blazing.
Far too many general managers put in absurd amount of value into draft picks. It's one thing to not want to trade away a first-round pick. Day Three picks? It's inexcusable to not bring in a difference-maker, especially when the Bengals are down for the count and the Bills have the head-to-head advantage over the Ravens and Chiefs. The AFC is Buffalo's for the taking, and they did nothing to reach out and grab it.
Now, the Bills are in an all-too familiar spot heading into the second half of the season - being far too reliant on Josh Allen and James Cook to do everything and praying that this time will be different.
But I'm sure the undersized defensive tackle with a high RAS score Beane takes in the fourth round will be awesome.
