The Buffalo Bills had an escape route available to them, but they didn't take it.
Last offseason's signing of Joshua Palmer to add to their WR depth chart didn't really work out, but he was signed to a multi-year deal.
That contract, though, had a way out. The Bills didn't take it.
According to Spotrac, Palmer had $7.8 million of his 2026 salary guaranteed as of Monday.
So the Bills could've released him and saved at least some cash, if they had done it before Monday, but that didn't happen.
9 #Bills players had contract triggers vest this weekend:
Josh Allen’s $52.5M 2027 salary is now fully guaranteed
Christian Benford’s $14.5M 2027 salary now guaranteed
$10.2M of Greg Rousseau’s 2027 salary is now guaranteed
$8.2M of Khalil Shakir’s 2027 salary is now…

Palmer is still just 26 years old, and evidently the Bills feel he still has something to offer.
His 2025 was a nightmare, though, appearing in 12 games and catching a total of 22 passes for 303 yards and no touchdowns.
With the Chargers, he had averaged about 550 yards per season and about 45 catches per season.
The Bills would gladly take a campaign more like that. Palmer won't have as big a role now that DJ Moore is in town, but maybe that helps free him up when he's on the field.
Buffalo could've run away but didn't. Now it's up to the Bills and Palmer to make this partnership pay off after all.
