Bills avoid huge injury scare after safety was carted off field

Like many teams in the NFL, the Buffalo Bills are currently holding their training camp so that players can get reacclimated to playing, learn new playbooks, and just gel with their teammates ahead of the pre-season slate and regular season course of games roll around. But the team would face quite the scare on Saturday afternoon, when their safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson had been carted off the training field due to a leg injury.

This injury could have some major implications for the Bills' defensive structure, given that Gardner-Johnson is one of three safeties, with the other two being Cole Bishop and the recently acquired UFL star D.J. Miller, but it's safe to say the aforementioned Super Bowl champion has the most experience, having made 87 career appearances over his seven-year career.

But luckily enough for Buffalo, it appears that their veteran defender missed out on anything too damaging.

Gardner-Johnson avoids any major damage

As reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, Gardner-Johnson appeared to have suffered from a lower calf strain, with the result coming after tests were run on the 28-year-old. While some strains can come in differing grades, which can address the severity of the injury, there doesn't appear to be any further information at this time.

If there's one thing to consider about the timing of the injury, the Bills' regular season kicks off in over a month, with their season-opener against the Houston Texans falling on September 13, meaning Gardner-Johnson will have some significant time to recover from his injury suffered on Saturday afternoon.

It will certainly be a bump in the road for Buffalo's chapter in the 28-year-old's career, having signed with the team on a one-year contract earlier in the offseason. It will definitely be a storyline to keep an eye on as the Bills' preseason continues.
