Bill Belichick questioned about Hall of Fame snub during his first press conference in months

Bill Belichick isn’t looking in the rearview at his shock Pro Football Hall of Fame snub.

Speaking to the media for the first time since being shut out of Canton in his initial attempt on the ballot, the second-year UNC football coach said he’s focused on improving the Tar Heels after a disastrous run in his debut season, not on matters “that are out of my control.”

“I’m focused on coaching this team and focused on, you know, getting Carolina football to highest level I can,” Belichick said Tuesday when asked about the Hall of Fame rejection, according to Pro Football Talk.

“That’s what I’ve always — I focus about what I can do, and things that are out of my control, I don’t worry about.”

An eight-time Super Bowl winner who brought six championships to New England, Belichick learned in January that he did not receive the 40 of 50 votes needed to seal his place in football immortality.

The perplexing development stunned the sports community, including the 73-year-old Belichick, who was said to be “puzzled” and “disappointed” over the news, per ESPN.

The Hall of Fame has since revealed it is pondering changes following the outcry, with president Jim Porter noting the tweaks are not a direct response to Belichick’s snub.

The changes include a return to in-person voting and talks after going virtual during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the possibility of replacing voters who may have violated guidelines by discussing the off-record debate publicly, according to ESPN.

Legendary Saints quarterback Drew Brees was elected to the Hall of Fame as part of the 2026 class, along with Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, Patriots and Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri and Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly.

Belichick has been away from the NFL since January 2024, when he parted ways with the Patriots after 24 seasons as head coach.

He shifted to the college ranks in December of that year.

Belichick’s first season in Chapel Hill was marred by headlines over the program and his relationship with 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson.

UNC finished the season at a disappointing 4-8.
