Penn State’s Drew Allar has been named a “top contender” for in way-too-early 2025 Heisman Trophy rankings by NCAA.com’s Stan Becton.
Becton listed Allar as one of the three most likely to win the most honorable award in college football along with LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier and Texas’ Arch Manning.
The 21-year-old Allar led Penn State on a run to the College Football Playoff in 2024, a run which ended with a semifinal loss to Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl.
Allar appeared in all 16 of the Nittany Lions’ games in 2024, throwing for 3,327 yards, 24 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. He’s dynamic in the run game too, rushing for 302 yards and 6 touchdowns.
The Medina, Ohio native was tagged as a top prospect at quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft and had the opportunity to leave school early, but decided to bet on himself and go back to State College for one more season. Under his leadership, Penn State anticipates similar results.
“The Nittany Lions should be a playoff contender again in 2025,” Becton writes. “If Allar can continue his development as a passer, he could be one of the top quarterbacks in the country.”
Allar would become just the second player in Penn State program history to win the Heisman, joining 1973 winner, running back John Cappelletti. Tight end Tyler Warren finished seventh in Heisman voting in 2024, the first Nittany Lion to place in the top ten since Saquon Barkley finished fourth in 2017.
Warren was a significant asset for Allar, hauling in 104 catches for 1,233 yards and 8 touchdowns last season, accounting for 37% of Allar’s production.
Replacing Warren will be difficult, but Allar does have running backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen returning, meaning he’ll have some familiar faces with him on offense. Still, filling the void left by Warren is a tall task.
If Allar is able to take home the Heisman in 2025, it will be a testament to his ability to adapt and elevate the play of those around him, not a reliance on high-end receiving weapons.
