This may come as a shock to some, but mattresses aren’t used solely for sleeping. As many sexually active people will tell you, the best mattress for sex lets you keep your mind off the bed itself and in the moment, as the last thing you want to be focusing on is a potential trip to the mattress store.

So, what exactly are the parameters that ensure a mattress is actually good for sex? As a professional mattress tester of five years, I've tested mattresses for all manner of purposes, including this one. You'll primarily need three things: temperature control for when things get hot and heavy in the most literal way; bounce, because overt sinking can really kill the vibe; and edge support, as the outer perimeter of the bed needs to be in a position to support you as you experiment with positions. Read on for the best options we’ve tested over the years.

Updated October 2025: We've revised the product descriptions in this guide, including adding pros and cons and specs tables. We've also added the Thuma Hybrid mattress, Crescendo 2 vibrator, and BedGear Cuddle Curve Performance Pillow, and ensured accuracy of links and prices.

The sleep experience and sex aren’t too far removed—you'll want something that makes you feel blissfully relaxed in both situations. Honestly, I can’t think of a mattress that offers a better intersection than the Nolah Evolution. This is a hybrid mattress with an organic cotton-covered pillow top, pressure-relieving foams, and pocketed coils. All that to say, it's very bouncy and responsive, so moving around should be seamless. There are also features to help with temperature control, like a heat escape gusset on the side. The memory foams and zoned coils are also designed to help with lumbar support, which I’ve found to be particularly helpful in instances of back pain.

The Nolah Evolution Hybrid ranges from $1,460 for a twin mattress to $3,454 for a split king.

People take a lot of pride in their bedroom abilities. Saatva takes great pride in crafting luxurious, handmade mattresses. To maintain the good work in both situations, the Saatva Classic features an innerspring construction very conducive to lovemaking. There are actually two coil types at play here: pocketed coils beneath the pillow top, and firmer traditional coils at the base. Pocketed coils are better at responding to the situation above them, as they can provide individualized support that homes in on high-weight areas. Whether that’s your lower back while you're sleeping, or your hands and knees when you’re more active, pocketed coils are adaptable. Traditional coils are interwoven, so they compress together. While the overall support isn’t as targeted, it still has its merits in terms of durability, edge support, full-body pushback, and airflow, particularly when things get hot and heavy. Together, they create a surface that’s easy to move around on and gives you some bounce to work with, which you’ll appreciate more in the moment as opposed to sinking too much. Use that bounce to your advantage.

Buyers can choose from Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm. I’d recommend you stick to the firmer options to avoid overt sinking, which can be a buzzkill. You can also select your ideal mattress height, with options of either 11.5 inches or 14.5 inches. The variance in firmness and height also opens up this mattress for all kinds of couples to enjoy, not just for sex but for sleeping as well. Couples with different body types and sleeping positions can find an option that works for both, such as Luxury Firm, which would suit both side sleepers and stomach sleepers. Every Saatva Classic comes with an extra lumbar support layer and quilting, regardless of height or firmness. For added coziness, the Classic features an organic cotton pillow top that gently hugs the body.

The Saatva Classic ranges from $1,399 for a twin mattress to $3,078 for a split California king.

Firm mattresses have a lot of appeal for couples. They don’t allow sleepers to sink in much (or at all), and firmer pushback helps maintain their spine’s normal, healthy alignment. Firm mattresses are also easier to move around on, whether that’s for sleep or otherwise. I tested the Medium firmness of the Thuma Hybrid mattress, and found it firmer than I expected—but not in a bad way. What stood out to me was not only the increased lumbar support but also how easily I could move around. Moving among my sides, stomach, and back was effortless, and my lower back remained lifted regardless of which way I slept. While the mattress doesn’t parlay as much pressure relief as I would’ve liked, especially for side sleeping, it didn’t throw a wrench into my sleep schedule, either.

For couples with differing sleeping positions and body types, choosing a firmer mattress like this ensures that each person gets the support they need. I also appreciated this mattress’s lack of motion transfer. I tested it with the Thuma Classic bed frame, and the setup was solid. Any movement I generated while sleeping was mainly absorbed by the bed, allowing my husband to sleep undisturbed.

Thuma Hybrid ranges from $1,095 for a twin mattress to $1,795 for a California king.

Memory Foam Hybrid Premium Firm Mattress

I tested the Wolf Memory Foam Hybrid in Premium Firm fairly recently, and there are quite a few features that make it a standout option for sex. First, as implied by the name, the overall firmness of the bed maintains a supportive surface. Weight is distributed well, so there’s no overload in one spot as you recline. It even maintains that strong support around the edges. This is helpful when you want to utilize the entire surface available to you. It won’t feel like being on the floor, as the memory foam top layer provides enough pressure relief to keep your joints from crying out. The firmness also keeps the bed responsive, so that it moves and keeps supporting you instead of overly sinking.

Wolf Mattresses are made to order in Texas, and the Premium Firm offers a cooling cover and gel memory foam meant for temperature regulation. Four more layers of memory foam follow, all of which fluctuate when it comes to offering pressure relief, support, and additional cooling. The pocketed coils in the middle are also made to keep motion from overly rocking the bed for co-sleepers or, in this case, sexy time. On the former, I’ve found that the bed does a good job of maintaining stability for even the most restless nights.

Wolf Memory Foam Hybrid Premium Firm Mattress ranges from $1,049 for a twin mattress to $1,399 for a king.

    Bear

    Elite Hybrid Mattress

This is one of WIRED reviewer Nena Farrell's top picks for back pain, as the overall sturdiness and firmness of this 14-inch behemoth promote support. You have three firmness options here, but for support, Luxury Firm and Firm are solid choices. The other aspect of this hybrid mattress that makes it a qualified mattress for sexual activities is the overall responsiveness—otherwise known as bounce. The last thing you need is to sink too much into your mattress. You'll feel unstable and likely a bit too warm, especially if it's an all-foam bed.

A phase-change material cover feels cool to the touch and should shine along with some cooling sheets for the occasion. The quilted topper provides lighter pressure relief, while specialized memory foam layers and springy pocketed coils maintain support.

Bear Elite Hybrid ranges from $2,284 for a twin mattress to $5,140 for a split king.

    Bedgear

    H Performance Mattress

WIRED reviewer Molly Higgins tested this mattress and found it to be cooling, comfy, and crowd-pleasing. It has two firmness levels: H6 is medium plush, and H4 is medium firm; the latter is what Molly has. It features a cooling cover, CertiPUR-US-certified memory foam, side air vents, and a foam-encased “suspension unit” for lighter support.

According to Molly, the edge support leaves something to be desired. However, the motion isolation is strong, so it doesn’t feel like an overt earthquake when winding down for sleep or when things are moving and shaking. The firmness level is also quite supportive, especially for those of different body types.

Bedgear H Performance (H4 and H6) ranges from $1,799 for a twin mattress to $2,899 for a split head California king.

Making Bedtime Sexier

Your mattress can't do all the hard work in supporting you during your fun. Your accessories can also make or break your experience (although you can try).

DreamCloud's the Bamboo Bed Frame and Headboard for $800: Just as I test mattresses, I also occasionally test bed frames. I've been massively impressed with this option, featuring a gorgeous wood stain and effortless Japanese joinery setup. More important, it's sturdy, stable, and quiet.

Buffy's Breeze Sheet Set for $160: When I asked WIRED sheets expert Nena Farrell what sheets she thought would be best for this topic, her first response was that there are plenty that she wouldn't recommend because they're too slippery. Traction is necessary, as you don't need to slip, fall, and have to explain in the emergency room what happened. The good news is that Buffy's Breeze sheet set uses cooling Oeko-Tex certified Tencel, which is grippy and hypoallergenic, and uses plant-based dyes.

Crescendo 2 Vibrator for $329: The Crescendo 2 is basically the vibrator version of a smart bed. It can be controlled via the app or the buttons on the side, and boasts six motors along its length that you can turn on and off via a range of preprogrammed vibrational settings. You also have the option to create your own. But we’ve tested even more options that you can check out in our Best Vibrators guide.

BedGear Flow Cuddle Curve Performance Pillow for $180: If you find yourself relying on pillows for a boost in certain positions but also need them to keep you supported during sleep, try the BedGear Flow Cuddle Curve Pillow. It’s our “best for chaotic sleepers” pick, given that it can support you in any sleep position—add on sex, and it’s got you there too. The air vents help you stay cool, and the washable cover makes cleanup easier. To see what other pillows we’ve tested and liked, head over to our guide on the Best Pillows.
