If you want to keep it simple, try placing a bet on a horse to win, place or show. The term "Across the Board" refers to placing a win, place and show bet on a single horse.

The exotic wagers are harder to cash, but they have larger payouts. For example, you can create a trifecta and pick the top three finishers in a race. It has to be in the correct order, unless you choose to pay more to box the wager.

Key Storylines for the Run for the Roses

Last year, Mystic Dan won the Kentucky Derby with odds at 18-1. It set a record with well over $200 million wagered on the race. This year, there are plenty of key storylines for horse racing fans to follow.

Loving Journalism

Journalism will likely be the favorite when the horses reach the gate on Sunday. The stalker won his last appearance in the Santa Anita Derby, and he's recorded the fastest Beyer Speed Figure in the field.

Baffert is Back

The successful trainer was received a suspension from Churchill Downs after Medina Spirit (2021 Kentucky Derby winner) failed a drug test. It was lifted in July of last year, so this will be Baffert's first time back for the Run for the Roses. He had two entries with Citizen Bull and Rodriguez, but Rodriguez scratched with a foot bruise.

Mike Smith, a two-time derby winner, will be aboard Rodriguez. The 58-year-old will try to lead Rodriguez to the front early, just as he did in the Wood Memorial.

Sandman Draws Dreaded 17 Post

No horse has ever won the Kentucky Derby from the 17 post, but Sandman will be among the betting favorites. The gray horse would give Casse and Ortiz their first derby victory. He was No. 2 in the Road to the Kentucky Derby standings, winning the Arkansas Derby.

Japan Has a Great Chance with Luxor Café

We haven't seen an international horse win the Kentucky Derby since 1976. Japanese owners and trainers have been improving over the past few years, and Luxor Café appears to be a legit contender on Saturday. The colt is from 2018 Triple Crown champ American Pharoah. The other entry from Japan is Admire Daytona, who won the UAE Derby.

Moving to the Other Triple Crown Races

All eyes will turn to the other Triple Crown races after the Kentucky Derby. The Preakness Stakes will be on May 17th, followed by the Belmont Stakes on June 8th. There were just 11 Triple Crown winners prior to American Pharoah accomplishing the feat in 2015, followed by Justify in 2018.
