Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been handed a seven-game ban and fined £100,000 for his summer comments regarding team-mate Heung-Min Son.

Bentancur was informed of his potential punishment by his agent last week and the Football Association has now confirmed the sanction.

An FA statement read: "An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview.

"It was alleged that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder breached FA Rule E3.1 as he acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or brought the game into disrepute.

"It was further alleged that this constitutes an 'aggravated breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference - whether express or implied - to nationality and/or race and/or ethnic origin.

Tottenham captain Heung-Min Son defends Bentancur following his FA charge for allegedly making offensive comments about his team-mate

"Rodrigo Bentancur denied this charge, but the independent Regulatory Commission found it to be proven and imposed his sanctions following a hearing."

Speaking on international duty with Uruguay, Bentancur said: "My agent rang me and told me he had been notified that this was the sanction."

The FA announced in September that it had charged Bentancur with misconduct in relation to its rules on abuse and insults and those that include references to race or ethnic origin.

Bentancur insisted it was a "very bad joke" after he said Son and his cousins "all look the same" in an interview with Uruguayan national TV.

Son said they remained "brothers" and "nothing had changed" after Bentancur immediately apologised to him, admitting he had "made a mistake".

Tottenham travel to Manchester City next on Saturday November 23.
