Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals were back in action on Sunday with a hard-charging game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was a solid showing for Burrow and the crew, and the Bengals pulled off a 33-27 win over Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers. That's not a small feat.
On top of losing, the NFL is deciding whether to punish one Buccaneers player, which would make the day even worse. The incident has to do with a hit on Burrow that happened near the end of the second quarter.
Before halftime, Burrow and the Bengals had a stunning drive, and even though they couldn't get a touchdown out of it, they did snag a field goal. That gave the Bengals a 14-point advantage going into the half.
Buccaneers' Tykee Smith may get fined for a late hit on Joe Burrow
At one point on the drive, Burrow went down and was hit by safety Tykee Smith of the Bucs. The officials noticed and flagged him for unnecessary roughness for the late hit. But, the punishment may not stop here.
Smith could get a fine from the NFL for his actions in the game. According to the NFL's official rules, players get fined for a range of actions in-game, and one is a late hit, which runs an $11,941 fine for the first offense.
And "Impermissible Use of the Helmet/Launching," which costs players $23,882 the first time they are called for it, according to the league's website.
"The rules are intended to protect the players from unnecessary risk, promote player safety and emphasize sportsmanship and respect of teammates, opponents, coaches, officials and fans," the league states on their official website.
The NFL hands out punishments and fines the following Saturday after games conclude, so the league is expected to announce its decision on Smith on Sept. 19.
