Bengals' former star Vontaze Burfict has his first coaching job

Vontaze Burfict was one of the most intimidating linebackers in the NFL during his time with the Cincinnati Bengals and Oakland Raiders.

Now, he's back on a sideline.

Burfict is part of the UNLV defensive coaching staff for this season, with the title Defensive Analyst.

He'll be working under defensive coordinator Paul Guenther, who coached Burfict in both Cincinnati and Oakland.

It appears to be the first college coaching gig for Burfict, who last appeared in the NFL in 2019.

Burfict played his college football at Arizona State and was a first-team All American, but off-field concerns led to him falling undrafted.

The Bengals signed him and got seven seasons out of him. He made the Pro Bowl in his second season (2013).

Burfict was also a controversial player, combining for 22 games suspended over his career for 14 separate incidents.

He was suspended 12 games for a personal foul with the Raiders in his final season.

Burfict ended up playing 79 games in his NFL career. He had 622 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 29 passes defensed, five interceptions, four fumbles forced and five fumbles recovered.

His chance to coach at UNLV comes at an intriguing time for the Runnin' Rebels. They have a chance to be the best non-power conference team in the nation this season and have legitimate dreams of a spot in the College Football Playoff.

It'd be quite the story if Burfict can do his part to help UNLV make the CFP, and this could be just the first stop on his coaching journey.
