Bengals adding veteran QBs after Joe Burrow injury crusher — including ex-Jet Mike White

Quarterback help is on the way, Cincy.

The Bengals officially put quarterback Joe Burrow on injured reserve on Tuesday, a day after it was revealed he’d need toe surgery. That puts backup Jake Browning back in the starting role, and set off a QB depth carousel behind him.

The first order of business was promoting Brett Rypien from the practice squad to be Browning’s backup for Week 3 against the Vikings.

Behind him, the team signed veterans Mike White and Sean Clifford to the practice squad, according to multiple reports on Tuesday.

White, 30, has played much of his NFL career in the AFC East — sans a stint with the Cowboys during his rookie year in 2018 — and spent the 2024 season with the Bills.

He saw success with the Jets during the 2021 season, replacing an injured Zach Wilson in an October loss to the Patriots.

White made his first career start the following week in a stunning 34-31 Jets win over the Bengals.

He later signed a two-year deal with the Dolphins in March 2023 but was released by the team the following August. He linked up with the Bills that same month.

In 15 games played, White has thrown nine touchdowns against 13 interceptions.

Meanwhile, the 27-year-old Clifford spent the past two seasons in Green Bay after the Packers selected him in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

He appeared in two regular-season games in 2023.

Burrow, 28, the former first-overall pick suffered what is believed to be Grade 3 turf toe and torn ligaments in the first half of the Bengals’ 31-27 win over the Jaguars on Sunday.

In relief of Burrow in Sunday’s 31-27 win over the Jaguars, Browning went 21-of-32 for 241 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.

Browning, who went 4-3 after Burrow suffered a wrist injury in 2023, will likely be seeing fellow backup Carson Wentz across the field in Minnesota.

Wentz could be starting in place of second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday’s loss to the Falcons.

With a win, the Bengals would move to 3-0 for the first time since 2015.
