Benfica’s transfer window has been far from calm this summer as the Portuguese giants find themselves racing against time to prepare for crucial Champions League playoff against OGC Nice.
The departure of club legend Angel Di Maria, who returned to Rosario on July 7 after eighteen years has created a major void that has sparked concern among fans and forced the club’s board into urgent action.
In response, Benfica completed the signings of two midfielders - Argentina’s Enzo Barrenechea and Colombia’s Richard Ríos with the aim of bringing strength and control to the center of the pitch.
While these additions have offered some relief to Bruno Lage, but the Portuguese side still need some marquee player in the final third.
Benfica tried to re-sign Joao Felix, who left for Atletico Madrid in 2019, but he instead chose Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia to join Cristiano Ronaldo.
Now the club is chasing a different solution to fill that attacking gap.

Benfica now wants PSG star

According to Correio da Manha [via Foot Mercato], Benfica have submitted a formal €11m [$12.5m] bid to PSG for Marco Asensio, the Spanish forward who finds himself unwanted in Paris.
The offer was made on July 30, and the club considers it more than sufficient to convince PSG to part ways with the player, who is not in Luis Enrique’s plans for the upcoming season.
Asensio joined PSG in 2023 after leaving Real Madrid, and although he arrived with high expectations has never fully established himself.
He spent the last six months on loan at Aston Villa and has since returned to PSG’s training facility in Poissy two weeks ago in an effort to stay fit.
Fenerbahce too, have contacted PSG over a possible transfer with some reports even claiming that both clubs have reached an agreement.
However, Marco Asensio has reportedly not agreed to personal terms and is not enthusiastic about moving to Turkey.
Benfica are now trying to capitalize on that hesitation and have placed him at the top of their list as a major offensive target.
The final decision now depends on PSG's response and whether Asensio sees Portugal as the better destination to revive his career.
