With Group G still very wide open, Belgium hope to salvage their 2026 FIFA World Cup as they meet embattled Iran in Los Angeles on Sunday.

The Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw against Egypt in their opening match, needing an own-goal to finish level after conceding early in the first half. The "golden generation" of Belgium has been largely disappointing at the World Cup recently, following up their third-place finish in 2018 with a group stage exit in 2022, leaving 2026 as the group's last chance to make their mark on the tournament.

Iran, meanwhile, have been forced to struggle through numerous off-field issues, including complicated travel plans thanks to the visa situation in the United States. They played to a thrilling 2-2 draw of their own against New Zealand leaving the group all square after matchday one.

The Sporting News brings you a look at the projected starting lineups for both teams, as well as an overview of their World Cup squads, plus odds, predictions, and how to watch the game.

Belgium predicted starting 11

4-2-3-1, right to left: 1. Courtois (GK) — 15. Meunier, 25. Ngoy, 4. Mechele, 5. De Cuyper — 24. Onana, 8. Tielemans — 10. Trossard, 7. De Bruyne, 11. Doku — 9. Lukaku.

  • Injured: None
  • Suspended: None
  • On a yellow card: Castagne, De Cuyper

Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia has a big call to make up front, as Romelu Lukaku came off the bench against Egypt and forced the equalizing own-goal. Yet he also missed a number of big chances to win the game, so it will be interesting to see if he's done enough to earn the start or whether Garcia sticks with the false nine of Charles De Ketelaere.

There are also questions about how to potentially fit Alexis Saelemaekers or Dodi Lukebakio into the XI to re-energize the attack some.

Iran predicted starting 11

3-4-3, right to left: 21. Beiranvand (GK) — 23. Rezaeian, 4. Khalilzadeh, 19. Nemati, 5. Mohammadi — 8. Mohebi, 14. Ghoddos, 6. Ezatolahi, 17. Yousefi — 20. Moghanlou, 9. Taremi.

  • Injured: None
  • Suspended: None
  • On a yellow card: Haji Safi

Iran are unlikely to change too many starters from the XI that showed good spirit against New Zealand, ultimately conceding on a pair of mistakes at the back but showing good fight overall. If anything, head coach Amir Ghalenoei will want more control of the match in midfield, and therefore could make changes in midfield.

Players such as Mehdi Torabi had some visa issues after their first match with New Zealand but those have been sorted out for now.

  • Prediction: Belgium 2-0 Iran

Belgium may not look the most impressive European side at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but they still have good quality in the side.

Iran, meanwhile, have been forced to deal with considerable hardship throughout the tournament, and it showed as they were spirited against New Zealand but ultimately played to a disappointing draw against the lowest-ranked side in the tournament field.

After a disappointing opener, back Jeremy Doku to have a strong influence on this game, in an ultimately low-scoring Belgian victory.
