The Chicago Bears had a great 2025 season, but they want to go even further in 2026.
It's clear the Bears have the right head coach and quarterback, and overall, the roster is definitely playoff caliber. However, the Bears won't be satisfied with simply making the playoffs, and it's clear they want to truly contend.
If true contention is the goal, though, then it wouldn't be surprising if the Bears try to make a big move before the season. One area that could definitely use some help is the pass rush, and luckily, there's a perfect player on the trade block.
Bears should trade for Josh Sweat
Josh Sweat signed a big four-year, $76.4 million deal with the Arizona Cardinals ahead of the 2025 season. Sweat was worth that money in his debut campaign as he played in all 17 games and racked up 12 sacks.
However, this offseason, rumors began spreading that Sweat was unhappy in Arizona. The Cardinals were among the worst teams in the league in 2025, and many expect that to be the case in 2026 as well. As a result, the Cardinals may look to move Sweat before Week 1.
Moe Moton of Bleacher Report recently identified eight moves that need to happen before Week 1. Naturally, trading Sweat was one suggestion, and Moton floated the Bears as a landing spot.
According to ESPN's Dan Graziano, Sweat isn't happy. Thus far, reporters haven't mentioned that this is a contract-related issue, which means he may just want out of Arizona's rebuild under a new coaching staff.
Sweat will be 30 next year. The Cardinals aren't close to playoff contention. They should trade him for a Day 2 pick in next year's draft.
Coming off a season with a career-high 12 sacks and 28 pressures, Sweat should be able to fetch an early-round draft pick from a pass-rusher-needy team like the Chicago Bears.
As Moton mentioned, Sweat isn't happy in Arizona, and there's no reason for the Cardinals to keep him. The Bears should take advantage of this situation and add a dynamic presence to their defense.
Moton also mentioned that it may only cost a second-round pick. If that's the case, there's no reason the Bears shouldn't pull the trigger. In 2025, Montez Sweat was the only Bear to get double-digit sacks, and the team didn't make any notable additions to the group this offseason.
Sweat has two seasons with double-digit sacks and has one Pro Bowl selection on his resume. He's yet to turn 30 and he's still under contract for three seasons, so he's not a rental. This is the type of move that could help the Bears take that next step.
