Bears 3,541-yard passer named 'player to watch' during training camp

This offseason, the Chicago Bears made a significant move that should impact young quarterback Caleb Williams.

The Bears fired head coach Matt Eberflus at the end of the season and hired Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as their next head coach.

Johnson is one of the best offensive minds in the NFL and should help Williams play as one of the best quarterbacks in the league this year.

There is a lot of hype around Williams and Johnson this offseason, and Gene Chamberlain from Bears On SI thinks Williams is a "player to watch" during training camp this summer.

"Of course he’ll be watched. Quarterbacks always are at camp. The Bears need to see progression from the naïve rookie who didn’t know what he didn’t know to one who can stand in the pocket with confidence and throw to spots where receivers will be. There needs to be more anticipatory throws, better understanding of when a receiver actually is open in the NFL, in addition to knowing defensive schemes quicker and reacting," Chamberlain wrote. "Williams can’t play hero ball as much as he tried to last year. They’ve loaded him up with playmakers and better protection, so he needs to let those players make plays."

In 17 games last season, Williams recorded 3,541 passing yards and 20 touchdowns, and should be able to improve with Johnson in his ear throughout the year.
