Baylor's Dave Aranda to return next year amid controversy

Baylor is sticking with head football coach Dave Aranda amid a week of disorder inside the athletic department, school president Linda Livingstone announced Friday. The decision comes one day after athletic director Mack Rhoades abruptly resigned, citing personal reasons, leaving the university without a long-term athletic leadership plan.

One of the big reasons why Aranda is keeping his job is because of Rhoades' departure. In a letter to supporters, Livingstone acknowledged the controversy surrounding the move but said it was essential during a turbulent period for Baylor and college sports.

“After careful evaluation and consideration, we have decided to retain Coach Dave Aranda as the leader of our football program,” she wrote. “We recognize this decision will generate strong opinions… We are not complacent, and we are not settling for mediocrity.”

The Bears are 5-5 heading into road and home matchups against Arizona and No. 23 Houston. Aranda is 36-35 over six seasons in Waco, including a 12-2 Big 12 title run in 2021 but followed by several down years. Despite a prolific offense under coordinator Jake Spavital led by national passing leader Sawyer Robertson, Baylor’s defense has struggled, ranking 119th nationally at 31.9 points allowed per game.

Livingstone cited the AD vacancy and a volatile national coaching carousel as key factors. With major jobs open at LSU, Florida, Penn State and Auburn, she said avoiding a costly buyout provides time to evaluate. Aranda still aligns with Baylor’s mission and maintains strong support within the locker room.
