Bayern Munich plotting a move to hijack €60m Chelsea target

5 hours ago 1

It has been a frustrating transfer window for Bayern Munich so far. The Bundesliga champions are keen on bringing attacking reinforcements this summer but have struggled to secure their primary targets.

With the confirmed departures of Leroy Sane and Thomas Müller following the FIFA Club World Cup, Bayern need players who can fill those roles. Therefore, they are eagerly looking to sign a left-winger to complement Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane in attack.

They had initially identified Florian Wirtz, only to see him move to Liverpool. They shifted their focus to PSG's Bradley Barcola, but the Parisians aren't ready to let the youngster leave this summer.

Bayern then intensified their interest in Nico Williams, but he is keen to join Barcelona. Although the German champions are monitoring the progress, the Blaugrana remain Williams' priority.

Therefore, as per reports on Kicker, Bayern Munich have accelerated interest in Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens. The English winger almost joined Chelsea ahead of the Club World Cup, but the Blues failed to agree on a transfer fee for the youngster.

According to BILD, Gittens had a seven-year agreement with Chelsea worth €6.5 million per year (he earns €3.5 million at Dortmund). Chelsea were also willing to pay €55 million, but Dortmund are in no mood to budge from their asking fee of €65 million.

So Bayern need to at least match Chelsea's fees and wages to have any chance of securing the player this summer.

What would Gittens bring to this Bayern Munich team?

Bayern have been monitoring the 20-year-old winger for some time, and they feel that he could be an ideal long-term replacement for Sane, who has already signed a new contract with Turkish champions Galatasaray.

The England U-21 star is a player with great potential. He is far away from a finished product, but his ability to waltz past the defenders in the final third is exceptional.

As per FBref, Gittens completed 3.9 successful take-ons per game, which is more than any other Bundesliga player in the 2024/25 season. He has also averaged 5.53 progressive carries and 9.2 progressive passes per 90 minutes last season. He also netted eight goals and provided three assists in 32 Bundesliga appearances.

Gittens hasn't been at his best under manager Niko Kovac, but he was far better under former Dortmund tactician Nuri Sahin. The Turkish tactician planned a system around him and gave him more freedom to play his game and provided isolation in wide areas to use his strength (1v1 takeons), which saw him flourish under Sahin.

Currently, Dortmund, Bayern and Chelsea are featuring in the Club World Cup, but once it gets over, we can expect the two clubs to fight it out for the 20-year-old youngster.
