Ballon d'Or other awards, explained: Complete list of trophies and how they are won

The Ballon d'Or will celebrate its 70th anniversary when the 2026 ceremony lands in London in October.

Soccer's most prestigious individual award will leave its traditional home of Paris and head for the UK, to honor Stoke City, Blackpool and England great Sir Stanley Matthews winning the inaugural Ballon d'Or in 1956.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele took the top men's prize last year, pipping Barcelona's Lamine Yamal, and another wide-open field is anticipated this time around.

But the Ballons d'Or for men and women are not the only awards presented on the gala night. Here, we run through all the prizes up for grabs.

What are the different Ballon d'Or awards?

For most of the Ballon d'Or's history, the main men's award was the only show in town.

Organisers France Football expanded its offering with prizes recognising the best female and youth players in the world in 2018. After further expansions across men's and women's categories, there are 12 additional awards as of 2026.

Ballon d'Or

The sport's most famous individual prize. A jury of 100 journalists from the top-ranked nations in men's soccer (according to FIFA) vote for players on a 30-man shortlist. The player with the most points tallied in that vote wins the trophy and is declared the best male footballer on Earth.

Lionel Messi holds the record for the most in history, with eight wins. Cristiano Ronaldo has five.

Ballon d'Or Feminin

A panel of 50 journalists from the top-ranked 50 FIFA nations in the world vote for the winner of the Ballon d'Or Feminin, a panel half the size of the one assembled to ballot the men's award.

Norway's Ada Hegerberg won the inaugural Ballon d'Or Feminin before Megan Rapinoe prevailed after the USWNT's World Cup success in 2019. Since then, it has been a tale of Barcelona and Spain domination, with Alexia Putellas winning twice before her teammate Aitana Bonmati embarked upon an ongoing streak of three in a row.

Kopa Trophy (men)

The Kopa Trophy was introduced in 2018 to honor the best men's player in the world aged under 21. It is selected by a jury of all former Ballon d'Or winners. It is named after France and Real Madrid great Raymond Kopa, who won the 1958 Ballon d'Or.

Barcelona's Lamine Yamal became the first two-time winner in 2025, retaining the trophy he won a year earlier.

Kopa Trophy (women)

The Kopa Trophy was one of three Ballon d'Or awards expanded to recognize female players in 2025. Vicky Lopez replicated Barcelona's established dominance of the men's award (four out of the past five winners) by taking home the prize.

Yashin Trophy (men)

Selected by a panel of journalists, the Yashin Award recognizes the best goalkeeper in the world. It is named after the great Soviet Union keeper Lev Yashin.

Liverpool and Brazil No. 1 Alisson won the first award in 2019, while Gianluigi Donnarumma lifted the trophy for a second time in 2025.

Part of the wider expansion of women's awards, England's Hannah Hampton won the first women's Yashin Trophy following her Euro 2025 heroics.

Gerd Muller Trophy (men)

The Striker of the Year award was first presented by the Ballon d'Or in 2021 to the highest-scoring footballer of the year. Following the death of the Bayern Munich and Germany goal-scoring great in August 2021, it was renamed the Gerd Muller Trophy for 2022.

In line with the main award, the Gerd Muller Trophy is based on goals scored across the course of the preceding European season, as opposed to the calendar year. Arsenal's Viktor Gyokeres won last year after scoring 63 times for Sporting CP and Sweden across 2024/25.

Gerd Muller Trophy (women)

Following in the footsteps of her compatriot Robert Lewandowski, who won the Gerd Muller Trophy in 2021 and 2022, Barcelona's Poland star Ewa Pajor won the first women's award in 2025.

Club of the Year (men)

Presented by France Football to the best football club from the previous seasons since 2021. Manchester City won the trophy back-to-back in 2022 and 2023, with the former instance being the only time it has not gone to the men's Champions League winner.

Club of the Year (women)

Club of the Year was expanded to women's teams at the 2023 ceremony. Barcelona Femini won back-to-back before Women's Champions League winners Arsenal prevailed in 2025.

Socrates Award

Presented by France Football in collaboration with Monaco-based advocacy group Peace and Sport since 2022, the Socrates Award recognises the best humanitarian work by a male or female footballer worldwide.

It is named after Socrates, the late Brazil international who opposed his country's military dictatorship in the 1980s by co-founding the Corinthians Democracy movement.

Johan Cruyff Trophy (men)

Named after Johan Cruyff, the three-time Ballon d'Or winner and influential former Barcelona coach, this prize has recognised the best head coach in men's football since 2024.

Johan Cruyff Trophy (women)

Introduced alongside the men's award in 2024, USWNT coach Emma Hayes won the first women's Johan Cruyff Trophy.
