Azerbaijan and Iceland return to action in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers when they square off at Bakcell Arena on Thursday. Having stormed to an emphatic 5-0 victory in September’s reverse fixture, Arnar Bergmann Gunnlaugsson’s men will head into the midweek tie looking to complete the double over the hosts and move level with second-placed Ukraine.

Azerbaijan were left empty-handed yet again last time out as they fell to a 2-1 loss against Ukraine in their World Cup qualifying clash on October 13.

Aykhan Abbasov’s side have failed to taste victory in 11 straight competitive games (9L 2D), a run which saw them finish rock-bottom in Group C1 of the UEFA Nations League back in November 2024.

Azerbaijan, who are one of 13 sides yet to taste victory in the World Cup qualifiers, currently sit rock-bottom in Group D, having picked up just one point from their four matches so far.

Meanwhile, Iceland turned in a resilient team display last time out when they fought back from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against France on October 13.

Before that, Gunnlaugsson’s men kicked off the campaign with a 5-0 victory over Azerbaijan on September 5, before suffering consecutive defeats against France and Ukraine.

Iceland have picked up four points from their four qualifying matches so far to sit third in the Group D standings, three points behind second-placed Ukraine in the playoff spot.

Azerbaijan vs Iceland Head-To-Head and Key Numbers

  • Azerbaijan have failed to win their last 15 matches across all competitions, losing 11 and picking up four draws since a 3-2 win over Kazakhstan in June 2024.
  • Iceland have lost all but one of their last six competitive matches since March 2024 while conceding 13 goals and scoring seven in that time.

Azerbaijan vs Iceland Prediction

While Azerbaijan’s qualifying hopes are all but over, Iceland must close the campaign on a strong note and hope for favorable results in the other group fixtures as they look to reach the playoffs.

Gunnlaugsson’s men boast the firepower needed to get the job done and we are backing them to secure all three points at Bakcell Arena.

Prediction: Azerbaijan 1-3 Iceland
