Austin Wells dropped from Yankees lineup against Mariners

On Tuesday night, the New York Yankees took to the field for their second matchup against the Seattle Mariners, looking to bounce back from a 1-2 loss earlier in the week.

The loss on Monday night cracked what had been a spotless record for the Yankees following their sweep of the San Francisco Giants to open the season. 

One the reasons the Yankees were so successful against the Giants was their offensive firepower, as they outscored San Francisco13-1 across the three-game slate. But, that firepower wasn’t present in the series opener against Seattle, as the Bronx Bombers only managed to put together five hits.

Aaron Boone makes a change to Yankees' lineup

Going into Tuesday night’s match, it was apparent that Yankees’ head coach Aaron Boone wanted to switch things up, as he pulled starting catcher Austin Wells from the lineup.

While there wasn't a given reason for the decision, it came during quite the dry spell for the Dominican catcher, who has posted an average of .154 throughout the four games he’s appeared in.

These numbers are down from what Wells posted during his time at the World Baseball Classic, where he hit .267 with four hits, including two home runs and five RBIs.

In his place, Boone selected J.C. Escarra to be behind home plate, making it his first appearance of the season. Last season with the Yankees, the 30-year-old slashed a .202 batting average with two home runs to his name.

In the 14 games that Escarra appeared in during Spring Training, he recorded ten hits and three home runs.
