The Tigers entered Sanford Stadium as 19.5-point underdogs on Saturday. But it didn't feel like it in this game.
In the end, Auburn pulled off its sixth win over a No. 1 team in school history, and fourth of the BCS era.
Despite going down 14-0 in the first quarter to Georgia on Saturday, Auburn responded well in the second and third quarters, scoring 24 unanswered points to take a 24-14 lead. Tiger quarterback Byrum Brown threw a touchdown pass and rushed for another.
But the Dawgs came alive in the fourth quarter, as quarterback Gunnar Stockton led two scoring drives, including a four-yard touchdown pass to London Humphreys to tie the game at 24:
— Yahoo Sports (@YahooSports) October 17, 2026Georgia's defense forced an Auburn punt on the Tigers next possession, which could have set up an easy Dawgs field goal. It appeared that the game was heading that way. An Auburn pass interference call gave Georgia a first down to the Tigers' 46, close to Georgia kicker Peyton Woodring's range.
But disaster struck on the next play, as Stockton fumbled, which Auburn recovered:

Brown led the Tigers into field goal range, helped by a costly roughing the passer penalty that put Auburn into field goal range. Alex McPherson, the younger brother of Cincinnati Bengals kicker Evan McPherson, nailed the 34-yarder to seal the upset victory.
The win gives Auburn its first victory over No. 1 Georgia since 1942, and the sixth overall Tiger win over a No. 1 ranked team. Let's take a look back at the last few times Auburn knocked off a No. 1.

History of Auburn No. 1 upsets
Nov. 21, 1942 vs. No. 1 Georgia
The game was held in Columbus, Ga., and Auburn was led by head coach Jack Meagher. Georgia was led by head coach Wally Butts.
Auburn upset the Dawgs 27-13. Georgia still went on to still win national championship, beating UCLA 9-0 in the Rose Bowl that year.
Oct. 15, 1994 vs. No. 1 Florida: W, 36-30
Led by former Gator quarterback Danny Wuerffel, who came off the bench for Terry Bean, Florida trailed 24-14 at halftime.
The Gators held a 33-29 lead late in the game, but Tiger quarterback Patrick Nix—the father of Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix—led a brilliant game-winning drive.
The Tigers got the ball back with no timeouts, but Nix led a seven-play, 55-yard drive capped off with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Bailey on 4th-and-10.
The Gators were outgained 487 to 367, and Florida finished with five turnovers on the day.
Oct. 13, 2001 vs. No. 1 Florida: W, 23-20
This game was a thriller, and Florida, led by head coach Steve Spurrier in his final season with the Gators, entered this game in Auburn undefeated. Florida was favored, coming off of ranked wins over Mississippi State and LSU in consecutive weeks.
Auburn led 10-6 at halftime, but Florida's offense, led by quarterback Rex Grossman, scored a touchdown to take the lead entering the fourth quarter.
Auburn scored 10 more points to swing momentum back to the Tigers, who played backup quarterback Daniel Cobb. With 10 seconds left, Auburn kicker Damon Duval kicked an incredible 44-yard game-winning field goal:
Nov. 30, 2013 vs. No. 1 Alabama: W, 34-28
If you can't remember this one off the bat, this one has gone down in Auburn history as the "Kick-Six game." Alabama entered undefeated, and looked primed for a BCS Championship game berth. But the Tigers were also having a stellar season, at 10-1 with just one loss to a ranked LSU team earlier in the season.
This game was a thriller throughout. Alabama led 21-14 at halftime, But Auburn tied things up at 21-all with a Nick Marshall touchdown pass. The game was tied entering the fourth quarter. Both offenses traded scores and it was tied at 28, as Auburn's defense held the Tide to a turnover on downs and a missed field goal in the fourth.
Alabama got the ball back with 15 seconds left. The Tide managed to drive down and set up a 57-yard field goal by kicker Cade Foster. The kick was short, and Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn smartly placed Chris Davis in the back of the end zone in case the kick was short, making a run-back possible.
I'll let Auburn radio announcer Rod Bramblett take it from here:
Nov. 25, 2017 vs. No. 1 Alabama: W, 26-14
This one wasn't as dramatic as the first two, but it was a bit more shocking. Alabama entered this game undefeated, whereas Auburn was unranked at 9-2 on the season.
Alabama trailed 10-7 at halftime, but scored a touchdown on the first drive of the second half to take a 13-7 lead. But it was all Auburn from there, as the Tigers scored 17 unanswered points, one of the touchdowns coming off an Alabama fumble late in the third.
The Tide still went on to win the College Football Playoff National Championship.
