Nothing gives the kiss of death like your boss giving you a vote of confidence, especially in the sports world.
Normally, when a coach is given a vote of confidence by their boss, it means they are in serious trouble, and that may be the case for Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze.
Freeze is coming into his third year at Auburn with a heavy load on him. His team didn’t make a bowl game again last year, and he is currently at the bottom in the SEC in recruiting.
Not to mention the fact that two of his players have been arrested in the past two weeks. So, maybe that’s why Auburn Athletic Director John Cohen felt the need to come out and defend his coach.
During an interview with AL.com, Cohen stood behind his coach despite his troubles.
“I’m gonna be really blunt with you,” Cohen said. “I rode up here in a car with Hugh Freeze and he had seven recruiting calls in those two hours. And many of the recruiting calls were kids calling him. One of the things I really admire about our football coach is there are many coaches out there, many who hand off recruiting to other people on their staff. Hugh Freeze is not one of them.”
That might be a shot at Alabama because there are rumors that Nick Saban has been helping Kalen DeBoer with his recruiting, something that they deny.
Cohen also shut down talk of Freeze golfing too much when many feel he should be out recruiting, saying he’s taken calls from recruits while on the golf course.
That’s all well and good, and it sounds like Freeze has Cohen’s support for now, but even he knows the bottom line is still wins and losses.
“Look, all anybody cares about is winning games.”
