Athletics' Denzel Clarke at risk of losing CF job to 22-year-old with .716 OPS

The Athletics are sitting in first place in the AL West right now, though their lead has shrunk to just 0.5 games over the Seattle Mariners.

But it's been a successful season thus far, and that's even been the case without Denzel Clarke for most of it, as he's on the injured list right now and won't come back until around the All-Star break.

For Clarke, the defensive wizard out in center field, there is real reason to be worried he won't have a starting job when he's back off the IL. ESPN's David Schoenfield noted how a 22-year-old who just made his debut might keep Clarke out of CF this year.

Denzel Clarke might lose starting CF job to 22-year-old

"In his absence, the A's tried infielder Zack Gelof in center, right fielder Lawrence Butler and now Henry Bolte," Schoenfield writes. "With his speed, Bolte is the best defensive option and if he hits -- he had an OPS over 1.000 at Triple-A Las Vegas -- then it's possible he keeps the job."

As great a defensive player as Clarke is, there's a real chance that he loses the starting center fielder job this season to 22-year-old prospect Henry Bolte.

This season, in 22 games, Clarke had a .170 batting average and a .417 OPS with a 16 OPS+. Those are some truly terrible offensive numbers, and not close to good enough to guarantee he gets a starting job when he's healthy.

Even last season, he had a 73 OPS+ and a .646 OPS. Those numbers might be a little bit acceptable with his otherworldly defense, but his current offensive production isn't good enough.

Bolte, meanwhile, is a fun young prospect who has a .716 OPS at the Major League level right now in 39 at-bats in 2026. He has a .282 batting average, and with decent defense, he's already put up 0.3 bWAR compared to Clarke's -0.4 bWAR this season.

As fun as watching Clarke play defense in center field is, the Athletics can't really justify keeping him out there, especially if Bolte is going to hit as well as he has this season and give solid defensive performances on top of it.
