Athletics cut ties with lefty reliever who posted 6.61 ERA with Braves

The Athletics have designated an eight-year veteran reliever for assignment, according to a team announcement. 

The left-hander made 36 appearances with the A's and posted a 5.65 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 43 innings. 

On Wednesday, Jose Suarez was DFA'd by the AL West club. The A's were Suarez's third team of the season, as he had already spent time with the Atlanta Braves and Seattle Mariners. 

"Suarez reached five years of major league service earlier this season and thus couldn’t be optioned to Triple-A. He’s making $900K this season," Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors wrote. "Any team that claims him would take on the remainder of that guaranteed salary and would have to plug him right onto the big league roster."

During the first six seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Angels, Suarez emerged as a semi-reliable starter who never flashed All-Star potential. 

He had a 119 ERA+ and allowed a respectable 7.8 hits per nine innings in 2021, perhaps his best season in the Majors. 

Replacing Suarez on the A's roster is righty Geoff Hartlieb, who had his contract selected from Triple-A Las Vegas.
