Astros seemingly make Jeremy Pena trade decision thats bad news for Yankees, Braves

There are a few teams around baseball that top contenders are keeping a close eye on. The Houston Astros are one of those teams, but not as a possible contender.

Instead, these teams are seeing if the Astros will falter and wind up selling by the August 3 trade deadline. In the Astros' case, there are several reasons why teams would like to see them sell. The most noteworthy of which is shortstop Jeremy Pena.

However, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Astros have seemingly made a trade decision on Pena, and it's some bad news for potential interested suitors like the New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves.

Astros seem to make trade decision on Jeremy Pena

"The Houston Astros have told teams that they are wasting their time asking about shortstop Jeremy Pena and first baseman Christian Walker," Nightengale reports.

This would be a significant update for the MLB trade deadline, as the Astros have been one of the teams mentioned as having some top trade chips.

While Yordan Alvarez was never likely to be traded, Pena, along with Christian Walker, Isaac Paredes, Josh Hader, and many others, could've been on the move this summer.

Instead of selling, however, the Astros plan to be trade deadline buyers, according to this report from Nightengale.

For the Yankees, who might be looking to replace Anthony Volpe, and the Braves, in an effort to replace Ha-Seong Kim, a trade for Pena would've been great.

But now, this report indicates the Astros plan to keep the star shortstop through at least the end of the 2026 season, as the World Series MVP does not appear to be available for trade this summer.
