Astros re-sign ex-Cubs, Royals .715 OPS outfielder

The Houston Astros made a significant adjustment to their front office on Monday. 

The AL West club and general manager Dana Brown mutually agreed to part ways. 

However, the Astros are still making roster moves amid the transition period. 

According to The Athletic's Chandler Rome, outfielder Nelson Velazquez has re-signed with Houston. 

"The Astros signed Nelson Velázquez to a major-league deal and optioned Ray Delgado to make room on the 26-man roster," Rome wrote on X. 

Velázquez went unclaimed on waivers after three previous appearances with the Astros. 

The 27-year-old went hitless in five trips to the plate but did drive in a run.

Before joining the Astros, Velazquez appeared in 34 games with the St. Louis Cardinals, hitting .216/.289/.432 with four homers and 12 RBIs. 

During the 2023 campaign, the right-handed hitter connected for 17 home runs in just 53 games with the Chicago Cubs and Kansas City Royals. 

Velazquez is out of minor league options, leaving the Astros with no choice but to designate him for assignment or release him if they decide to part ways again.
