According to MLB.com, the Houston Astros have the 29th-ranked farm system in Major League Baseball. Yes, only one team in Major League Baseball has a worse farm system.
That's concerning for several reasons, given the Astros haven't exactly been willing to spend money recently, they’ve allowed some of their top players to either walk in free agency or through trades, and more, it makes the future less promising.
However, the Astros seemingly continue to figure things out, so until they don't, it's impossible to count them out.
But improving that farm system is important, and the Astros will have an opportunity to do that with the 21st overall pick in the 2025 MLB draft.
Given the team's current position, they have to select the best player available at No. 21. MLB.com recently predicted them to select Kayson Cunningham, a middle infielder out of San Antonio.
“It’s quite possible Cunningham is gone by now, so the Astros could turn their sights on Neyens, who has among the best raw power from the high school group,” they wrote.
Cunningham is a small, 5'10, and is committed to the University of Texas. He was on the 18U USA Team and won MVP after hitting .417 last year.
He played for the USA Prime 17u National/Detroit Tigers scout team in high school, and is already 19 years old.
According to Perfect Game, he's the fifth-ranked player in the 2025 high school class. A Perfect Game All-American a year ago, he's succeeded at the highest level during his time in high school.
While the professional ranks are much different, there's reason to believe his game will translate in pro ball.
