The Houston Astros are set to take on the Boston Red Sox in their second of three games on Saturday. It will be left-handed pitcher Colton Gordon going against the Red Sox's Walker Buehler.
Houston came out of the MLB trade deadline with three key pieces that will help their batting lineup, acquiring outfielder Jesus Sanchez, third baseman Ramon Urias, and shortstop Carlos Correa.
Despite targeting a starting pitcher as well, the Astros realized that they have multiple pitchers coming off the injured list soon, and didn't make a deal in the pitching staff.
Well, this strategy is starting to come together for the Astros. The Athletic's Chandler Rome provided an update on right-handed starter Cristian Javier before their game Saturday.
"Cristian Javier will make one more minor-league rehab start some time next week, Joe Espada said," Rome mentioned in a post on Saturday afternoon.

— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) August 2, 2025Javier, 28, hasn't seen the MLB mound since May of 2024. The Astros starter underwent Tommy John surgery after discovering damage to his UCL in his throwing elbow.
The starter is targeting a return to the Astros sometime in August, and it would be perfect timing for Houston as they continue to adjust from the large number of injuries they have sustained in 2025.
Cristian Javier has been one of the Houston Astros' most consistent starters since making his debut in 2020. Through 116 appearances for them, he's posted career stats that include a 33-18 record, 3.59 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 564 strikeouts in 501 innings.
A major procedure like Tommy John surgery will test the veteran pitcher's talents. Expect the Astros to be cautious in the return of Cristian Javier while he continues to ramp up his workload.
