Astros GM Dana Brown reveals recovery timeline for Jake Meyers amid injury

8 hours ago 1

The Houston Astros have been dealing with a litany of injuries this season. From multiple starters missing significant time in the first half of the season, to breakout sluggers having their incredible seasons paused, it's been a rough year for the Astros.

But, despite the injuries, they still sit atop the AL West and are in great shape overall. Even though Houston has lost a few key players, the team has still been thriving.

Ahead of the All-Star break, a great time to recover for multiple injured stars, Chandler Rome of The Athletic shared comments from Astros general manager Dana Brown on the team's various injuries. But one that is most prominent is the update with Jake Meyers.

On the team's pregame radio show, Astros GM Dana Brown said Jake Meyers will miss "at the very minimum, three-plus weeks" with his right calf strain.

"On the team's pregame radio show," Rome writes, "Astros GM Dana Brown said Jake Meyers will miss, at the very minimum, three plus weeks with his right calf strain."

The update from Brown is a worrisome one, especially amid the drama surrounding the team's injuries this season. Rome wrote a piece on the injury drama surrounding the Astros, and the Meyers injury was what sparked him to call out the organization.

He was dealing with leg issues before a game, and yet, was put in the lineup. When he went out to play the field, he further injured his calf, resulting in a calf strain which will now, according to Brown, keep the outfielder out well past the All-Star break.

Meyers was placed on the injured list on July 11th, and with him set to miss at least three weeks, he will miss the rest of July, and potentially well into August as well.

The minimum amount of time Brown said Meyers will miss is three weeks, with the wording of "very minimum" painting a bleak picture for his return in early August. If this holds, Houston will be without their breakout center fielder for, potentially, a month.

He was hitting .308 with solid defense in center field and was in the middle of his best season offensively in his Major League career. The 29-year-old had a .774 OPS before his injury, which was the fourth-best on the Astros roster this season.

This update from Brown is a bad one. While Meyers is still capable of returning this season, the wording Brown used implies it won't be for a while.

The position player depth is being tested in Houston, and this extended absence from Meyers will further complicate things for Brown and the Astros as they look to maintain their spot atop the AL West this season.
