Astros $119 million All-Star could cut ties with Houston in favor of Tigers

The Houston Astros fell short in 2024 and ultimately were swept by the suddenly resurgent Detroit Tigers in the American League Wild Card Series. Now, a big decision awaits them, as Alex Bregman is currently a free agent.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com listed several potential suitors for the star third baseman, and among them were the same Tigers that knocked the Astros out of the playoffs.

"Gio Urshela and Matt Vierling started 108 games combined at third base last season for the Tigers, who ranked near the bottom of the American League at the position with 11 home runs (tied for 13th) and a .644 OPS (10th)," Feinsand wrote. "Bregman's reunion with manager A.J. Hinch would allow the Tigers to use Vierling in a super-utility role, while adding a much-needed bat to Detroit's lineup."

Detroit looks prepared to spend some money this offseason. Their young core carried them to within one win of the ALCS, but they need to supplement it with some proven stars.

Hinch managed Bregman and the Astros from 2015-19. Bregman came up in 2016 and helped guide the Astros to their first title the following year, and also was an MVP candidate when they returned to the Fall Classic in 2019.

Houston even reached the ALCS seven consecutive years from 2017-23. The star third baseman hit .260 with 26 home runs, 75 RBI and a .768 OPS while also posting a 4.1 WAR.

Detroit could instantly become AL Central favorites if they were to steal Bregman away from the Astros, and a reunion between him and Hinch might be a good story.
