Arsenal target one more forward before transfer deadline

Arsenal remain in the market for another attacking addition before the summer transfer window shuts, The Sporting News understands.

The Gunners opened the new Premier League season with a 3-0 win over newly-promoted side Coventry City at Emirates Stadium on Friday night.

Mikel Arteta's side have already spent £194.5 million ($264m) on five new signings this summer, including Christian Tzolis, Bruno Guimaraes, Ezri Konsa and the permanent arrival of defender Piero Hincapie, while Illan Meslier joined on a free transfer.

However, another forward remains on the agenda if the right opportunity emerges before the deadline.

Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez is among the players admired by Arsenal, while Victor Osimhen has also been linked with a move to north London.

The club had previously explored a blockbuster deal for Vinicius Junior, but the Brazilian has since committed his future to Real Madrid by signing a new contract.

What are Arsenal looking for in the transfer window?

Arsenal began the window with the intention of strengthening on the left side of their attack.

Tzolis' performances since arriving have exceeded expectations with the Greece international impressing Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta.

That could allow Arsenal to be more flexible over their final attacking target, with the club prepared to consider players capable of improving Arteta's options across the forward line rather than focusing solely on a specialist left winger.

Chief executive Richard Garlick has made clear that any further signing will need to be capable of making a significant difference to a squad which won the Premier League and reached last season's Champions League final.

"It's players that are going to take Arsenal forward. In the past we've looked at players that maybe helped build out the squad or get us to a certain level, but now we're competing right at the top level, and we do need to bring in players that are going to change the dial.

"You can see we've already invested in the squad this season, and if the right opportunity arises, then we will look to strengthen in all areas.

"The window's open for the next couple of weeks, and if there are players that are going to come in and move Arsenal forward, then we will look at that.

"The standard now is high, though - the bar's been set winning the Premier League title and getting to the Champions League final. We're probably fishing in a smaller pool of quality players, and that means that it's tricky to land those players that are going to drive Arsenal forward.

"But if the right opportunity presents itself, we'll certainly be exploring it."

Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus and Ethan Nwaneri are all the subject of interest from elsewhere with Arsenal open to letting all three leave before the transfer deadline on September 3.

What is the latest on Mikel Arteta's contract extension?

Arteta wants Arsenal to become world's best club Arsenal's ambitions extend beyond retaining their domestic crown.

The Spaniard's own future is also expected to be resolved in the near future, with Garlick insisting both parties are relaxed about contract negotiations.

"Mikel wants to be at Arsenal and we want Mikel at Arsenal. It's only a matter of time before we put that into a new contract. Everyone is very confident and calm.

"We're just navigating a transfer window and I'm sure Mikel's contract will be resolved very shortly."

The Sporting News understands Arteta is expected to become the highest paid manager in the Premier League once he puts pen-to-paper on a new long-term contract.

Arsenal's next Premier League game is against Aston Villa on 31 August, before a home match with Chelsea on 6 September.
