Argentina take on Egypt in the Round of 16 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Tuesday, July 7, with a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals on the line.
Lionel Scaloni's side booked its place in the last 16 with a 3-2 victory over Cape Verde, overcoming a spirited challenge to continue its title defence.
Egypt also came through a dramatic Round of 32 encounter, edging past Australia in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. Hossam Hassan's team has impressed with its resilience throughout the tournament and now faces its toughest test yet against the reigning world champions.
Here are the latest team news updates and projected starting lineups for Argentina and Egypt.

Argentina projected starting 11
(4-3-3, right to left): 23. E. Martinez (GK) — 26. N. Molina, 13. C. Romero, 6. L. Martinez, 25. F. Medina — 7. R. De Paul, 24. E. Fernandez, 20. A. Mac Allister — 10. L. Messi, 22. L. Martinez, 16. T. Almada
- Injured: N. Gonzalez (ankle, doubt), F. Medina (muscle, doubt)
- Suspended: None
- On a yellow card: G. Montiel
Argentina had to come through a gruelling Round of 32 tie against Cape Verde, but Scaloni is still expected to name a first-choice side for Tuesday's meeting with Egypt.
Emiliano Martinez should continue in goal, with Nahuel Molina, Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martinez set to keep their places in defence. Facundo Medina was forced off in the last round, although his issue has been played down as cramp, while Nicolas Tagliafico is available if Scaloni opts for a change at left-back.
Rodrigo De Paul, Enzo Fernandez and Alexis Mac Allister are expected to retain their places in midfield, giving Argentina the balance of energy, control and creativity that has shaped much of their tournament.
Lionel Messi, who added another knockout-stage goal contribution against Cape Verde, is projected to start in attack alongside Lautaro Martinez and Thiago Almada. Nico Gonzalez is more of a doubt because of a reported ankle problem.
Egypt projected starting 11
(4-4-2, right to left): 23. M. Shoubir (GK) — 3. M. Hany, 14. H. Fathy, 2. Y. Ibrahim, 5. R. Rabia — 10. M. Salah, 17. M. Lasheen, 19. M. Attia, 11. M. Ziko — 8. E. Ashour, 22. O. Marmoush
- Injured: M. Abdelmonem (ankle, doubt), A. Fatouh (hamstring), K. Hafez (muscle strain, doubt)
- Suspended: None
- On a yellow card: H. Hassan, Y. Ibrahim
Hossam Hassan is expected to make some defensive adjustments after Egypt's penalty-shootout win over Australia, with several players facing late fitness checks before the Round of 16.
Mostafa Shoubir should continue in goal. Karim Hafez was withdrawn against Australia and is uncertain although he says he is fit to play, while Ahmed Fatouh and Mohamed Abdelmonem are also doubts, leaving Mohamed Hany, Yasser Ibrahim, Ramy Rabia and Hamdy Fathy in contention to form the back line.
Mohanad Lasheen is available again after serving a suspension and could return in midfield alongside Marawan Attia. Emam Ashour is also expected to start, giving Egypt extra energy between the lines.
Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush remain Egypt's main attacking threats, with Mostafa Ziko also likely to feature after starting in the last round.

Argentina vs. Egypt predictions, betting odds
Egypt has already exceeded expectations by reaching the Round of 16, but the challenge does not get any tougher than facing the reigning world champions. Scaloni's side has grown into the tournament and remains one of the strongest contenders to retain the trophy.
Salah and Marmoush have the quality to trouble any defence, but Argentina's experience, midfield control and attacking depth should ultimately prove decisive over 90 minutes.
- Score prediction: Argentina 3-1 Egypt
