Arch Manning replacing Quinn Ewers as Longhorns’ starter persists as narrative, Texas’s QB competition still unsettled in Week 13 of college football season

Quinn Ewers is not quieting the talk of the Longhorns replacing him as QB1 and Texas head football coach Steve Sarkisian handing the reins over to redshirt freshman sensation Arch Manning; who took over earlier this season due to a Ewers injury but is the fanbase’s signal-caller of choice.

Saturday Blitz’s Andrew Boardwine sounded unconvinced Ewers will finish the season at the helm of the Longhorns offense after an uneven but satisfactory effort (20/32 passing, 176 yards, two touchdowns) in a 20-10 win over Arkansas in Week 12.

“Texas is still hopeful to make a deep run in the College Football Playoff, and going with sophomore Arch Manning would certainly be a risk,” Boardwine prefaced before asking, “But, knowing what you have with Ewers, is taking the risk worth it?

“Right now, Texas has not made the decision to move on from Quinn Ewers, but it will be interesting to see if he can turn it around, or if Sarkisian is forced to make a tough decision.”

Texas head football coach Steve Sarkisian’s Longhorn legacy will be decided by QB decision this season

Including the 2025 class, Steve Sarkisian has four straight top-six finishes nationally in recruiting. Texas made its first College Football Playoff in 2023/24 and is in the running to make the SEC Championship if they can win out.

Winning out is not guaranteed, though.

Kentucky is down near the bottom of the conference but upset Ole Miss in Oxford this season. The Wildcats also played Georgia tough in Week 3. Meanwhile, Texas A&M has lost just twice all season and only lost to ranked teams: Notre Dame and South Carolina. The Aggies own home-field advantage in that all-important Lone Star State Showdown.

Sarkisian needs to get this QB decision right. If he doesn’t have the Kentucky game’s garbage minutes to evaluate who is truly ahead after gaining a big lead, the decision will at least become easier.

Ewers needs to dominate Kentucky. If he doesn’t, the calls for Arch will leak into Week 14 ahead of a season-defining contest.
