Reports are flying that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez broke up with her long-term fiancé Riley Roberts.
But the Congresswoman suddenly became tight-lipped. When asked by The Post Wednesday about the split, she smiled. And she said with a straight face, “I don’t comment on my private life – thank you.”
I don’t mean to nitpick, but aren’t the inside of one’s ovaries private?
It’s quite disingenuous to say this when only days ago, the 36-year-old was on an Instagram video announcing she was freezing her eggs, while pulling up her shirt, shooting a needle into her stomach and teasing her political future.
Fertility is perhaps the most intimate aspect of a woman’s life.
Not since the Sussexes have we seen such a farce made of the word “privacy.”
Back in 2020, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry demanded it and then spilled their guts and grievances to Oprah, filmed an “intimate” Netflix docuseries about their relationship and, in the case of Harry, complained in his memoir that his room at Balmoral was smaller than his brothers.
While their lives were for sale to the highest bidder, AOC’s personal revelations are deployed in pursuit of her lofty political ambitions. It’s transactional and performative, like the time she cried outside the immigration facility.
Will she run for president in 2028? She’s planting the seed with a slight nod to the far left sisterhood. Egg freezing is the next pantsuit.
“This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life,” she said. “I feel empowered to make this choice.”
Remember, the Squad member has been a trailblazer in the fusion of shameless politician and shameless influencer: cooking dinner in a “Tax the Rich” shirt or playing the game “Among Us” while urging viewers to “get out the vote.” Accessibility and skillful oversharing have been central to her unique brand.
Roberts, whom she met while the pair were students at Boston University, is the one who actually kept a low profile. However, their love story has provided plenty of fodder for fawning profiles in glossy fashion magazines like Vogue and GQ.
And when the socialist Cinderella arrived at the Met Gala in 2021, wearing a “Tax the Rich” dress, he was at her side.
He also appeared alongside her in the 2019 Netflix documentary, “Knocking Down the House.”
Roberts was undoubtedly part of her brand building and unique origin story. Now?
The ginger dude is off limits.
Words mean very little these days.
It’s like what she told ABC’s Jonathan Karl on Sunday: “woke 1 was crazy.” She dismissed it as a whoopsie moment without explaining the shift. Words like defund, abolish and decolonize apparently meant absolutely nothing to a movement that demanded fealty and purity and punished those who didn’t bow down.
Why should “private” be any different.
It’s like Mamdani calling his wife a “private person” while his office said she’d get NYPD security for personal travel overseas.
They want it both ways.
But Ocasio-Cortez isn’t a particularly serious or substantive politician. She’s an influencer with good political instincts. I’d applaud her if she’s suddenly embraced discretion. We should know less about each other in this vapid TikTok era.
But Ocasio-Cortez? She’s just waiting for the perfect time to drop her new hinge profile with the accompanying slogan: Who wants to marry a Marxist?
