Anthony Edwards did almost everything the Minnesota Timberwolves could have asked of him Monday night. He scored 47 points, attacked the basket relentlessly and nearly carried his team to another victory. Yet Minnesota left Cleveland with a 127-125 overtime loss and one of the strangest individual box-score combinations of the young NBA season.

Rudy Gobert collected 20 rebounds but missed all nine of his field-goal attempts. The contrast was striking. Minnesota received elite rebounding production from its veteran center, but the Timberwolves couldn't convert that advantage into enough offense to survive a furious Cavaliers comeback.

Edwards delivered another monster performance

Edwards shot 19-for-33 from the field and finished with his highest scoring total of the season. He connected on five of his 15 three-point attempts, repeatedly creating offense as Minnesota tried to protect its lead. It was the seventh time in his career he had scored at least 47 points in a game, according to the Associated Press.

Minnesota led by as many as 15 points, but Cleveland steadily worked its way back. James Harden scored 19 points and handed out nine assists, while Evan Mobley contributed 18 points and 10 rebounds. Rookie Meleek Thomas added 16 points in his NBA debut, giving the Cavaliers another valuable offensive contribution.

Edwards remained dangerous until the closing seconds. He made a three-pointer in overtime to tie the game at 121, but Donovan Mitchell answered with a 19-foot jumper that put Cleveland ahead for good. Edwards later missed a potential tying three-pointer as Minnesota's final comeback attempt fell short.

A 20-rebound night with zero field goals

Gobert's performance was unusual because his rebounding remained highly productive even as his shooting completely disappeared. He grabbed 20 boards, an impressive total in any game, but finished 0-for-9 from the field. That meant Minnesota's leading scorer and one of its primary interior players produced dramatically different offensive results.

Mitchell finished with 26 points and seven assists for Cleveland, including five points in overtime. Peyton Watson contributed 15 points and eight rebounds, while Harden made two late free throws that helped protect the Cavaliers' lead. Cleveland improved to 2-1 and handed Minnesota its first defeat after three consecutive victories.

The Timberwolves still have reasons to be encouraged by Edwards' individual brilliance, but Monday exposed how difficult it can be to win when so much of the scoring responsibility falls on one player. Minnesota had 47 points from Edwards and 20 rebounds from Gobert, two extraordinary numbers in isolation. Together, they still weren't enough to prevent an overtime loss.
