Anthony Davis may have arrived in Washington as a trade piece. It does not sound like he sees himself that way anymore.
According to Sam Amico, Davis has informed Wizards president Michael Winger that he has strong interest in remaining in Washington long term. That is a significant development for a franchise that spent the last two years tearing things down and stockpiling assets.
It is even more significant because Davis easily could have treated the Wizards as a temporary stop on the way to his next contender.

That's a superstar choosing the project.

Instead, the message coming out of Washington is the opposite. Davis reportedly wants to stay.
That changes the tone around the Wizards’ rebuild in a hurry. Rebuilding teams usually spend years trying to convince stars that the project is worth their time and effort. Washington may already have one doing it on his own. Davis is 33, owed $58.5 million next season and holds a $62.8 million player option for 2027-28, so this is not some low-stakes flyer for either side.
If he is telling Winger he wants to be part of the long-term picture, that gives the Wizards something they have not had in a while: a real veteran pillar choosing the plan instead of merely tolerating it.
It also makes the rest of Washington’s roster look more interesting. Alex Sarr is already one of the most important young bigs in the league for this rebuild.
The Wizards also hold the No. 1 pick in next week’s draft, which means another franchise-level talent is about to enter the mix. Add Davis to that equation, and the Wizards are suddenly balancing two timelines at once instead of simply waiting on the future.
That does not mean the rebuild is finished. Washington still has to draft the right player, develop its young core and prove this group can win meaningful games. But if Davis is serious about staying, the Wizards are no longer just collecting talent.
They are starting to look like a destination for their own future.
